A Traceroute Story

“A screenshot of a traceroute to this website”

Hello, my name is Packet, with a capital P, and I will show you the beginning of my trip from Frank’s phone (in the UK) to this website (hosted on S3 in the US).

  1. I start from an unknown place that I know very well, the phone. And while I do not share the address with you, trust me, it is cozy.
  2. Moving around Vodafone routers
  3. Still enjoying Vodafone hospitality
  4. Empty lands
  5. even more empty fields in the middle of somewhere
  6. while my GPS says USA, the time it took me to get there (29.5ms) is too short for a transatlantic crossing and back, because
  7. I’m in the UK again! This is probably due to the internal routing of cw. But who are CW? Let’s do a whois on cw.net and discover that it is Ascio Technologies, Inc. Danmark Filial af Ascio technologies, Inc. USA, with a registered address owned by Vodafone UK. So a Danish company, filial of a USA one, but really managed from the UK. Globalisation at its best (or worst, you choose)
  8. I continue to move around CW network. 50% increase in roundtime (from 30ms to 45ms), I must be travelling far
  9. following the flow. Notice I’ve double my roundtime (45ms to 97.9ms) this is the sign of a transatlantic trip, probably under water (satellite takes longer) and
  10. Yeah! I am in the US and already on the Amazon network. I know this thanks to a reverse lookup.
  11. and onward moving around the Amazon network until reaching frankcontrepois.com

Thank you for being with me for all this trip and hope to see your data flowing with me soon!
