Value of private data

For a number of reasons I am very interested in the value of private data.

My question for you is: how should we account for the value of data when the traditional ways of measuring success would consider a company with 0 revenue, lots of losses and 14 employees and lots of data to be very bad while WhatsApp got sold for $14B?
