From the book Good strategy/Bad Strategy
In the 50 years between 1875 and 1925 the following happened:
- Electricity starts being used for lighting
- Electricity being used in factories, changing everything and vaporising any previous investment. For example before electricity power was mostly generated by a big wheel pushed by a water stream, factories had to be close to a water stream (hence real estate prices near water were high), also the power capped the size of the company.
- In less than 5 years the electric street car reduced travel time from a full day to 20 minutes
- Everyone was able to have good clothes thanks to sewing machines
- Telegraph, telephone being introduced and use (can you imagine!)
- Railways expanding and allowing fast long travel in countries
- Cars starting to change the landscape of the world
- Highways to help the growth
- Airplanes being commercialised
- Agriculture is mechanised allowing for population numbers to grow!
- IBM first automated tabulating machines
- billboard invented
- new companies: Coca Cola, Ford, Kellogg etc…
The Modern world started at that time
We are not that fast today :)
